Easter
by Lynn Cohen

Our eyes shatter
shards of blue and green glass
prism-like pieces of time
twist in the kaleidiscope
of broken memories
preserved in a camera obscura

I am your Beatrice
All your women the same
Like my men
They interchange
Into archetypal candidates
For a taken job

And you know
As the warm winds blow
Through the church on an April’s afternoon
The seasons of planting and reaping and birthing
Are repeating
Over and over
The bodies we have planted
For you are the seed
And I the earth
The primal mystery
Is born another season
In the Easter calling
The tolling bell
And purgatorial fires
the lily moments
a lone figure
rises and offers redemption
