Today (Now a Month Ago)

I set a balance sheet to music—
     I grabbed a brass ring from an old set of curtains.

I swam in a car pool.
     I aired my dirty laundry in public.
     I threw pebbles into a gristmill.

I reminisced about good old days
    before the violence of video games—
    days when disemboweling
    was our Survivor

and somehow, I still managed to lose my innocence.

    I put ashes in my coffee
and then drank them down, as
bitter as that might seem.
