The Moon
by Kelly Powell
There is a part of me
that is glad that they faked
The Moon Landing—
The part that needs to know
that the impossible is possible
and that there is an escape
from the restlessness of this earth
that we are destroying
so rapidly.
That at least we might pretend
to use the moon as a landfill of a kind
and that maybe this planet won’t end up
as Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes
or 1984. Or a Brave New World
that has such people in’t.
Then there is the part of me that’s
angry at being deceived, that
we couldn’t actually get there,
that stupid human tricks
don’t extend to outer space and maybe
we have already become Soylent Green,
Planet of the Apes, 1984, Lord of the Flies
and Brave New World all rolled into
one giant Dystopia of cruelties and
heartache and the moon
is not a valid option.
It is at these times that I want to
throw in the towel but its that half-empty
half-full thing again, a millennia
in the making and still true
that you need good and evil,
the yin and the yang.
But, I still want the moon
and I’ll have it. Otherwise, all’s
I’ve got is the remote in one hand
and nothing to hold in the other.
