I said “bird”
and Key registered
the word “bored”
in its brain.
And added,
“yeah, you also said
‘ray’ but you think
you said ‘rain’.”
“I am a…” bird
“…in the…” rain.
“I am a…” board
“…in the…” ray.
I am a bird-brain.
I murmur
incomplete phrases.
Should practice
to speak louder
and clearer. Until
it stops hurting
my chest.
Enunciate
like a sergeant,
so that each word
pangs into a mind.
Wish I’d had a recorder
tucked in my coat
because I did say “rain”
and not “ray.”
