TWO CORES; TWO DRINKS

On a drawing, I drink the expanses
Of the Pine Barrens Core Preservation Area.
The eastern side, a Rorschach Blot Test,
With lumps of land, Rocky Point, Brookhaven, and Southaven Parks
That hang in threads to a huge chunk
East from these to Southampton.
A six by ten mile area.
All told, fifty thousand acres
Of sand and forest.
Along the Peconic River
Some Pitch Pines are sixty foot giants
Others, six foot dwarfs
Just above Westhampton Village.
Beneath this core...fresh, clean water
We can drink,
That slowly inches toward
North and south to the coasts.
Fresh water - core of our body.
Open space - core of our souls.
