TALKIN’ THE OLD KITCHEN RADIO BLUES
by Leonard Greco
Awoke this morning
in a dream,
in a dream awoke
back in Mama’s
kitchen; Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey
playing on the old Emerson radio and
the sound of bacon in a pan sizzling
like rain on a hot tin roof
I remember August rain and
how every apartment in that
four-story brick building had a
kitchen radio; Gershwin and Cole Porter
and Heaven I’m in Heaven
I remember kitchen radios and
sweet August rain and hot tar streets with
heart rising like steam when those raindrops
pelted
and
I remember when most men wore
fedoras and women wore hats to
church on Sunday; some works of art,
other’s just plain funny and
how Billie Holliday torched those Blues
burning them into my soul
and how Mama always listened to
that old
kitchen radio –
