Gina’s Request

She asks if I can write a poem
for her friend
words to comfort
asks if I can convey what a mother feels
when her child dies
a child conceived in love
a child who lived inside of her
born of love
nurtured with love
undying love
that death cannot kill

Are there words to express this loss
words that confess desire to die
when a Mother’s heart dies
when a Mother wants to die with her child
how do I write tears
spell sorrow
paint a Mother’s pain

Gina has children
knows love
cries for and with her friend
feels a poem can say what she cannot say
mother to mother
embrace of understanding
caring and more

But I cannot write this poem
I don’t know the form for her loss
I have no meter for mourning
No rhyme for reason
No metaphor
No sonnet sad enough
No song for a mother’s loss
