Impossible Dreaming
by JoSelle Vanderhooft

Spear the rainbow trout and open him
window-wide. Beneath his reflective scales,
beneath argent fat and silt-slipping muscle
his bones spread like seagull wings
against the sanguine gloaming.

Still the grey-winged gull and open her
like a mansion’s door. Beneath soft down,
beneath pearlescent jelly and wound muscle
her bones branch like a trout’s spine
against the mirrored surf.

This is an ancient contradiction
a paradox no dissection can explain.
instead we must look into cloudy time
when the mountains rang with dragon song
and the thrombic beat of leather wings.
