The Subtle Twist
For Yaron York
by Edmund Miller

To keep the mailing list current, Ron stands
Like terminal nfn (a bit top heavy
With a slight twist) greeting each new bevy
Of gym bunnies to hit Twilo. He hands
First-timers the fag-tag application,
Then shifts his weight so he faces the door,
Scrutinizing the crowd in search of more
Recruits. When asked his own occupation

And pursuits in daylight, Yaron disdains
His lot as “very dull”–without rapture:
“Waiting tables is nothing to capture
In poetry.” But drudgery–in chains
Even–leaves the mind free, as he tells you
With armband of barbed wire in tattoo.

Yaron, who is from Israel, works as a travel agent and personal trainer and does the mailing list for John Blair Productions. He has also been door man at The Break, but he no longer has to wait tables. Having at one time cultivated a trashy vinyl look, he got rid of all those clothes when he realized he “might just as well send the pants to work” without him. Although he appears to be in exceptional shape, Yaron says he has been neglecting his body of late: “At first it seems as if you can know what people like, and you try to be perfect, perfect, perfect, but then you realize it’s better if you just feel happy inside.”
