Coming of Age
for Christopher

by Charlene Knadle

As a Child, he sat with Lego happily.
His friends said, "Make me a car...
a train." He learned to use schematics,
solder with a surgeon's touch,
program in BASIC, FORTRAN, C++,
COBOL. Putting together computers
is an art that needs both mind and hands;
he doesn't stop to think about it. For him,
such art has been his life--the mode
changing merely with the times--and
growth accumulates within him
as spring after spring of rising sap
adds height and breadth to trees.
He thinks it's unremarkable.
I stand by, watching, complimenting
less than I'd like, lest I ruin the charm
of modesty and strength, as he becomes
a "man of genius," an engineer.
