Dead Moose
by Carol Emerson

Relationships
should be more like moose.
It’s easy to tell when a moose dies
everything in the woods smells the foul odor
and wolves strip the meat
leaving the rest for vultures.
The magnificent hide slips
from the heavy carcass
While lower forms of life return
the bones to welcoming earth.

Relationships
crack and fall apart like pavement
growing more rutted with every pass
of the garbage truck
and no one seems to notice the stench
in the living room
or how gaps in the proud hide
grow wider each day
all decaying into a shameless heap
behind the furniture
with nary a maggot in sight.
