THE NIGHT I ROSE IN LOVE
By Mankh

Falling is for stars, stock markets and desperate lovers.

The night i rose in love
the moon was waxing and a touch of alcohol
flowed anonymously through my veins

conversation and music filled my ears,
until i was alone and a radio playing in a car in a meadow
kept me company beneath the gritty stars sparkling in all directions
but too far from the road to guide me home.

With two feet on the ground
i rose in love because i did not fall from grace
because adam-and-eve was a fairy tale
i could not believe in because
in the beginning there was no evil

and surely there was as much chance of
adam-and-adam or eve-and-eve
because a snake is a snake
as a spade is a spade,
what is, truly is

and a snake is also a symbol
as a spade is a symbol,
what is, truly is a symbol.

The night i rose in love
i had had enough of unrequited love,
had enough of false promises
or of anyone else being the object of my desire
because objects are things placed on a mantle
or inside a cabinet to someday use.

The night i rose in love
there was no one in particular who was near
but the moon was close enough
so i gave it my full attention
while the winter wind swept sweet nothings
through the dried grasses at my feet.

The night i rose in love i was not narcissistic
because a swan seeing its own reflection in the water is not narcissistic
because love is the boundless fabric of a raiment we all wear

and the night i rose in love
the space between my heart and yours
filled up with an image that is still showing
even in the corners of my little room

while somewhere a piece of silk
now yields to the touch
of warm fingers.
