A weekly video reading of poetry by the poet.
Edgar Carlson is a native Long Islander. He started writing poetry
seriously at Wagner College on Staten Island. William Packard was a
creative writing teacher at Wagner during this time. He graduated from
Wagner (BA-english) and went to graduate school at Brooklyn College where he
studied under John Ashbery. John Yau was his class member. During this
time he had some sucess publishing some of his poems out-of-state.
His writing style was heavily confessional and eventually reached
a dead-end and his early contacts in poetry eventually dried up. He started
a business rebuilding wooden pallets then went into landscaping and
has owned and operated a gardening business(NORTHERN LIGHTS
LANDSCAPING) since 1983. He also reiceived an associates degree in
Ornamental Horticultural from SUNY FARMINGDALE, where he studied formal
garden techniques under Dr. Richard Iversen.
He did not write much for years, then in 2003 he went to Paula Camacho's
writing group in the Farmingdale Library. He re-established himself as a poet,
creating an interesting timeline:
28 years between published poems
33 years between placing in a poetry contest
30 years between graduate school enrollments for creative writing.
Edgar is currently enrolled in the new graduate school program at Adelphi
University, under Judith Baumel, starting up this September. He is a student
of Maxwell Corydon Wheat, Jr. and George Wallace.
I write my poems always re-reading from the start and getting
as far as i can into the new workzone of the poem....subject and content are
secondary to the arrangement of the language.....my poems are self-
expression but also new construction or reformulations of words that
like new recipes turn into good swedish meatballs or just more watery gruel
