Allen Planz received his M.A. in English from New York University in 1961. He was in the Doctoral Studies program at the University of Tennessee. Allen Planz is a U.S. Army veteran. He is widowed.
Allen is a teacher and an editor:
1962-present. Allen has taught Composition, American Literature, World Literature, Modern Poetry, etc. at universities in the South and North, including New York University, Dowling, Suffolk Community, Southampton (adjunct Associate Professor: English, Adult Ed. & Seamester). He was the first poet-in-residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace.
1970-1981. He was a participant in the New York State Poets-in-the-schools program, residencies in schools, greater metropolitan area.
l978-1982. Director Suffolk County programs; led workshops for prisoners, schoolchildren, military personnel, kindergartners and seniors.
1976-present. Conducted workshops and seminars for a variety of institutions in the fields of poetry, writing, fishing and coastal ecology.
1983-85. Columnist and reporter, at the "East Hampton Star"; contributor of essays and reviews before and after that period.
1969-1973. Allen served as Poetry Editor for "The Nation".
Allen has been a Coast Guard licensed captain since l972 and pilot on expeditions to the Bahamas, Costa Rica, and the Sea of Cortez.
1997-present. Allen has been involved as a Workshop Leader & Presentation Speaker, Live Poets Society conference, Dowling College; in the Parrish Museum Southampton College Graduate Writing Program, the Workshops at Canio's Bookshop and Ocean Zendo (zen poetry), at C.W. Post, Adelphi College, and Otisville Correctional Institute (writer in residence, teaching writing & meditation).
Allen’s prose and essays have appeared in "The New York Times", "Tricycle", "Parnassus", "Saltwater Sportsman", "The Fisherman", "Fisheries", "Southampton Press" and "East Hampton Star".
