The Waves and the Wake
(For V.R.)
by Annabelle Moseley
I dreamed we gathered on a night beach
to watch you go.
Our bare feet sank into the cool sand
on the edge of the shore
as the blue-flecked stars above
dropped into our open hands.
We gave you those glossy beads-
each one pearl-different
and river-clear.
You made a small boat from them
to carry you away.
The waves gave in and breathed out,
left a wake of froth and foam.
You arranged us, the ones you'd gathered-
your collected shells and rocks
in the round,
and so as your craft pressed on
I'm sure you could still see
the outline of our circle,
like the shed skin of the moon.
But you are no stranger to the ocean.
You caught the scent
of salt and grief.
