Sand and Poetry
by Annabelle Moseley
Tonight,
the poetry poured from me like sand
dry and heated,
gasping for the thrill of water,
a sunless kiss.
I ran my hands through it;
Bits of it slipped
between my fingers;
and some grains settled
in the valleys of my palms.
The poetry asked to be sorted
from my pile of longings,
and run along my body like pumice,
sifting the sorrow of my skin.
The poetry made me a warm, gritty beach
and I sank into it,
until sand and poetry
clung to my body
and I was dressed in metaphor.
